Ethics

Professional Standards

The National Association of REALTORS® adopted its Code of Ethics in 1913. Since then, REALTORS® everywhere have pledged to meet the Code’s high professional standards upon becoming members of the Association.

The professional standards process plays a very important role in our association. It helps ensure honorable, faithful and competent service to our members, their clients, customers and other members of the public through the enforcement and disciplinary procedures that accompany the Code.

“The basic building block of good communication is the feeling that every human being is unique and of value. In acknowledging that, mediation can resolve anything.”

Changes to the Code of Ethics for 2024

NAR’s Board of Directors approved a change to the Code of Ethics training requirement, extending it from every two years to every three years. This extends the current cycle deadline from March 1, 2022, to Dec. 31, 2024.

REALTORS® are required to complete ethics training of not less than 2 hours, 30 minutes of instructional time. The training must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by the National Association of REALTORS®.

Training may be completed through NAR’s online courses or through another method, such as online or classroom courses via local/state associations.
